What is it with souless American horror movie franchises. The Saw series?
is little more than celluloid designer violence, where you care nothing what happens to the characters on the screen and even less for a plotline – but sort of revel in gratuitous voyeurism. There’s something really disturbing about that and it’s nothing to do with cutting edge filmaking or being scared. It’s a bit like watching a dogfight. No more please.
I see your point, but who cares? Soulless brutal violence has been a cornerstone of horror films for the last 25 years. If you look at the Friday the 13th movies, you’ll see only more of the same, sometimes people just like to be shocked at what they’re seeing and the visceral effect it has on them. Personally, I’m not a fan of the Saw movies, because of the fact that they want to make it seem like there’s all this intrigue and suspense; those movies take themselves way too seriously. But I won’t fault them for their depravity. If it ain’t your cup, man, don’t drink from it.
